Penland School Of Crafts
Less than 4 miles from Spruce Pine NC, the home of Bear Den
Campground and Big Bear Cabin at Bear Den, Penland School of
Crafts is located in a retreat-like setting in the Blue Ridge
Mountain community of Penland North Carolina. Penland School of
Crafts is recognized as a nationally and internationally
renowned center for education in traditional and contemporary
craft. Lucy Morgan, originally an Episcopalian teacher at the
Appalachian School, founded Penland Weavers and Potters craft
group in 1923 after spending a few months at Berea College
learning the craft of weaving. Morgan was committed to reviving
handing weaving in mountain communities through the Penland
Weavers and Potters group, a cottage industry that provided
local women with looms, materials and education about weaving
and then marketed and sold the hand-woven goods.
In 1929 the Penland School was born when Lucy Morgan persuaded a
renowned weaving expert to come and teach a week-long class at
Penland School. Several out of state students, in addition to
the local women, turned out, and today Penland remains a
one-of-a-kind institution with no standing faculty. Penland
School receives teachers from colleges and universities and
studio artists each year to carry out its commitment to the
mission of promoting and celebrating the education and practice
of craft within a harmonious and stimulating sanctuary.
Today, Penland School of Crafts offers classes in its idyllic
setting during the Spring, Summer and Fall in over 10 media,
namely, books & paper, clay, drawing, glass, iron, metals,
photography, printmaking, textiles, and wood. Offered in
one-week and two-week classes in the Summer and eight-week
sessions, called Concentrations, in the Spring and Fall, the
Penland School classes are attended by those aged 19 to 90. Over
1200 students, from beginners drawn to Penland’s allure to
professional craftspeople looking for inspiration, refinement
and technical exchange of information on their craft, come to
Penland each year for instruction. Penland also offers 9
students each year the core fellowship program, two-years of
full-time study at Penland. Similarly, the resident artist
program hosts students for three years with low-cost housing and
studio space.
Whether you are one of the 14,000 visitors that pass through
Penland School each year or an student taking classes at Penland,
Bear Den Campround and Big Bear Cabin is the perfect Spruce Pine
NC Cabin Rental for you to experience the community created to
encourage, as Lucy Morgan termed, "the joy of creative
occupation and a certain togetherness-working with one another
in creating the good and the beautiful." Visitors can tour the
Penland School of Crafts campus (listed on the National Register
of Historic Places, and purchase the work of the students,
resident artists and instructors.
