Cycling and Mountain Bike NC
There is a plethora of opportunities to road and mountain bike in the High Country. A chosen training spot for Lance Armstrong, you too can test your endurance on the High Country’s illustrious biking trails or simply enjoy the mountain beauty on a gentle meandering trail. Bear Den Campground and Big Bear Cabin offer a central location for access to Mountain Bike Trails and Boone Bike Touring of all sorts.

You can jump on the Blue Ridge Parkway, known as a world destination among avid cyclists, located next door to Bear Den Campground, and travel from Linville Falls to Craggy Gardens or take a day trip from the Linville Falls and Crabtree Meadows area. Biking enthusiasts laud the Blue Ridge Parkway as the mecca of bicycle touring because of its smooth pavement and gorgeous views. Boone Bike Touring is one of the top cycling tours in the southeast and it happens to be in our backyard! For a challenging ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway, take an out-and-back ride from Blowing Rock NC and the Moses Cone Manor House and Craft Center at Milepost 294. Traveling south, expect a downhill ride before a 7-mile climb on the trek to Little Switzerland at mile marker 334. A total of 41 miles one way, you can choose to bike 83 for the out-and-back route. This is Boone Bike Touring at its best, offering a 4,000 feet elevation change between the two towns, screaming downhill stints, and panoramic rewards of Grandfather Mountain and Wilson Creek Valley.

If you are looking for rugged mountain biking, look no further than the 200 miles of trail in the Pisgah National Forest surrounding Bear Den Campground. Yancey’s Ridge is 14 miles of fun in a loop trail near Linville. Just southeast of Linville lies the Wilson Creek Recreation Area where the Thorps Creek-Schoolhouse Ridge Trail and Wilson Ridge Trail offer a crazy roller coaster rides including a section referred to as 21 Jumps. Schoolhouse Ridge is a 5.8 mile loop with extreme drops and loads of surprises as it follows Thorps Creek to Schoolhouse Ridge. In total, the 15 mile Wilson Ridge Trail loop is for serious mountain bikers. Resulting from the connection of two gravel roads, including the 2.4-mile Woodruff Branch Trail, a single track trail that is a technically challenging section. Mortimer Recreation Area is off of NC 181 at Brown Mountain Beach Road and five miles down SR 1328.

Other Boone Bike trails include 18-Mile Ride, a great gravel road biking trail starting in a small community near Maple Grove Church. Inside the Boone Fork Recreation Area Benson Trail is a 5.5 mile loop trail and widely considered the 2nd Best Mountain Biking Trail in North Carolina. Benson Trail can be sectioned together using other trails in the area, including Buckeye Trail, creating a figure eight ride. The Mountains to Sea NC Bike Route 2 travels directly through Burnsville North Carolina and Boone North Carolina on its 900-plus-mile route from Murphy North Carolina in the mountains to Manteo North Carolina on the coast. Just next door to Spruce Pine NC, Burnsville North Carolina also offers the Yancey County River Cruise. Cycle through the town known as the Heart of the Blue Ridge along the banks of Jack’s Creek and the Toe River on this 37.4 mile road biking loop. Come stay with Bear Den Campground and have your fill of Boone Bike Touring and Mountain Bike NC in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.
