Penland School of Crafts is another favorite activity in this
area. It is a nationally acclaimed center for craft education
located in Penland, NC. Penland School of Crafts was founded by
a lady named Miss Lucy Morgan. She was a teacher at an
Episcopalian school that once occupied several buildings which
are still part of Penland. In 1923, Miss Lucy Morgan organized
the Penland Weavers which provided looms and materials to the
local women and allowed them to market their hand woven goods.
She began inviting many nationally known guest instructors to
teach weaving at the school. When requests for instruction began
to come in from all areas of the country, the Penland School of
Crafts in Penland, North Carolina was born. Soon after the first
students arrived in 1929, other crafts were added and the school
began to acquire property, raise funds, and construct buildings.
Since that time, Penland School of Crafts has grown to
encompass about 400 acres and 41 structures. Today, over 1,200
people come to Penland each year seeking instruction in ten
craft media. In the summer, the school offers one and two week
sessions. In the spring and fall, Penland offers eight week
sessions. Each class is structured by the teacher, but most are
a mix of lectures, demonstrations, individual studio work, and
an assortment of field trips. Penland School of Crafts of
Penland, NC also offers daily movement classes, evening slide
shows, a library, visits to nearby studios, dances, volleyball
games, a swim in the Toe River, and walks in the beautiful
countryside.
